Buying (no) records

For several years I had to visit the local record shop regularly. It was compulsory. Each Tuesday, because new drum and bass records are on the shelves on Tuesday and Friday here. And I listened to all of them, never left the shop without new vinyl. Additionally there were the joys of Ebay. There they are, the records I was looking for since a few years already. I want them. No, I have to get them. But drum and bass is not the only genre I enjoy. So every now and then a new techno record, a new jazz cd,… were bought by me.

But for what? Spending 100-150 Euros on records and cd’s each month and I am not a dj. I don’t even own a mixer or a turntable with pitch control. Just an almost 20 years old Dual that does its job satisfactorily. Sometimes I listened to records just once, put them on the shelf in my living room and forgot about them. But the addiction remained and there was nothing I could do about it.

Though things have changed over the last two years. I don’t buy as much records as I used to. Basically I already know what records I want when entering the shop. I have become more selective and the guys at the shop don’t see me regularly anymore. Haven’t been there since four weeks now. Also Ebay is a website I hardly visit anymore. Actually I have bought the last item there more than six months ago. Just not interested anymore.

I got interested in dubstep recently but I don’t feel like I have to get new releases constantly as it was with other genres before. Bleep have become my source for that genre now. Downloading a few tracks every now and then and I am happy already. It’s still strange to me to download music, not having a physical copy in my hands. But it is an easy and low priced way to discover new music.

So what does it all mean? No vinyl addiction anymore? Is it just temporarily? I don’t know. I love music but the urge to have all the new stuff is gone. Admittedly that is a rather relieving feeling. Time will tell if it stays this way or if I will be back to the old habit.
