Daniel Maze - Avatar

Rest netlabel? A catalogue of 31 releases? Never heard about this Cologne, Germany based label before, although it is running since April 2004 already. But thanks to De:Bug podcast I know one more netlabel now. And judging by this release it is a splendid one.

Daniel Maze, who has been also unknown to me up to now, is a Canadian producer who has released on several other labels like Testtube and Sine3pm before. Many people will file these five tracks under Ambient. Though be prepared to hear some distortion which more than once breaks into the sound. The mood of the tracks is not happy or joyful but they also refrain from being depressing. Instead you will find dark and tearing soundscapes. Just right for this time of the year.

Daniel Maze is a great producer who knows how to create suspense. He is also not afraid to leave the beatless path of the genre like on the the third track, called On The Farm. Simply an excellent release.

I don’t know if the music on this release is characteristic for the music of Daniel Maze but I will certainly check out his other releases.
