Vista and DRM
1. January 2007 – 19:25 byIt seems Microsoft does everything to please the movie and music industry. According to an in depth analysis by Peter Gutmann its new OS Vista features some nasty ways to control the reproduction of premium content. Though Microsoft’s DRM will not only affect users but the whole computer industry as well. Graphics and sound card vendors will have to offer and maintain a driver for each model of their product range. So for example the Catalyst and Detonator drivers by ATI and nVidia will be a thing of the past. This policy will certainly affect costs of vendors.
The new DRM will also be able to decrease sound quality, disable driver functionality and even driver revocation. Microsoft tried to establish a certified driver policy with XP already but it seems Vista forces vendors to play by Microsoft’s rules.
I still run a XP system but if Microsoft won’t change its policy regarding DRM I will have to switch to Linux or a Mac. This DRM policy is unacceptable to someone who has no pirated material on his computer.
