Tagging is Confusing

Tagging? Confusing? You probably think it is dead easy, and wonder what I am talking about since there are a zillion services around which allow tagging. Though do you always know how to separate several tags? Comma separated or spaces between tags?

I am using various web services, and I think tags are great and beneficial, though I am always confused which tagging system I have to use. And it seems I am not the only one. David Beach even asks why tagging without spaces was still around. OK, some people will argue that he has to ask this because his company, Wink, prefers comma separation.
Anyway, here are some examples to illustrate what I mean:

  • Separation by spaces: del.icio.us, ClaimID, Flickr,…
  • Comma separated: Ma.gnolia, Wink, Last.FM, Upcoming,…

It would be great if there was some kind of standard but I guess companies won’t change their system because users of their services are already used to it.
