NYT on DLD

John Markoff of the New York Times has written a report on the Digital Life Design conference in Munich which was ending on Tuesday. While I can’t comment on the conference itself, there have been very positive comments on it, some of his observations make me wonder which message he is trying to get across.

So he sees Silicon Valley’s dominance waning and European startups being on the upswing. Yes, they are. Skype, Netvibes, he mentions some of them. He writes:

A number of participants at the conference contended that with the quick spread of ideas in an Internet age, Silicon Valley companies no longer have a first-mover advantage.

Though in the next and last paragraph of the article he also writes, quoting Gerald Haag:

[Gerald Haag] cited a case in which an idea from Silicon Valley was introduced in Europe. Two weeks later, he said, “there was a German version.”

Well then? Innovators or copycats? If he really wants to support European startups why did he include that quote? It makes no sense in the context of the article. I simply don’t get it.
