Most bloggers are quickly bored with Wordpress’ standard theme, Kubrick. I think it is a very good theme actually, but it is used just too often and bloggers don’t customise or tweak it. Well, the K2 derivative I am currently running is probably used as often as Kubrick. So I don’t want to blame people running Kubrick. 
Anyway, if you want to have a well designed, functional theme have a look at this list (with screenshots) of 80 Wordpress themes. Some excellent choices.
