Serph - Social Media Search

Serph is a new search engine which has switched from closed beta to more open beta earlier this week. It is a project by the folks behind ACS and Pronet Advertising, Neil Patel and Cameron Olthuis.

Serph is tracking and monitoring the latest news and buzz about companies, products, you name it. To gather information Serph searches various social media and social news services: Flickr, Technorati, Bloglines, Sphere, Digg, Newsvine, Topix, YouTube, Podzinger, Yahoo Answers, Ma.gnolia, del.icio.us, Feedster, and Google Blog Search.

Results are displayed in reverse chronological order including the sources and a description. It’s great to see that Serph collocates identical results and displays them as just one, citing all sources. Previous searches are displayed in the right sidebar as well as related searches. It is possible to subscribe to searches by RSS which helps keeping track of them without coming back to Serph each time. A Firefox search plugin is available, too.

Serph is a very useful, plain-vanilla tool. Though it has to find its niche between blog search engines and meme tracking services. It probably depends on what users are looking for and best suits their needs.
