Egyptian Blogger Jailed for Blog Posts

Blogging can be fun, informative, controversial, but also dangerous. Egyptian blogger Abdel Karim was sentenced to four years of imprisonment by a court in Alexandria, Egypt yesterday. He was convicted for insulting Islam and Egypt’s president Mubarak.

The 22-year old blogger was arrested in November already after he had criticised his conservative university and also president Mubarak. But better read the Amnesty International report and the Guardian article for more information.

Often people claim bloggers were not journalists, they couldn’t change anything and basically can’t be taken serious. Though this case shows that there are countries and people who fight freedom of speech. They fear bloggers’ opinions.

Be vocal about your opinion but keep in mind that some people and governments will do anything to stop you; especially if you’re blogging in an undemocratic country.
