People search engine Wink seems to be constantly adjusting its focus to people search and profile aggregation while dropping features which don’t fit the new strategy one by one. Bookmarks have fallen victim to it now.
Back in February this became apparent already and has been confirmed by Wink’s community manager Cheralyn Watson on Monday. So users can’t add new bookmarks directly to the site anymore; existing bookmarks are still available, though they can’t be edited or deleted. Consequently collections and the Wink bookmarklet are also not available anymore; however the bookmarklet is still working (in case you have one).
Relating to the new focus Wink announced that it has bought back shares of its stock from investors. This seems to be logical as the original idea of Wink was quite different. Though it looks like most investors remain invested with the company and don’t try to save what’s left of their capital as could have been guessed.
The next few months will be crucial for Wink to prove that the new strategy will work out.
