Mashable has a very interesting article on Web 2.0 rip offs which is also mentioning two of Germany’s Twitter clones. Coincidentally (or maybe not) the Museum of Modern Betas has an even more complete list of Twitter admirers.
There is also DasBeep and Baluuu. I didn’t know about those companies until today. Sloggen is also listed, even though it has adopted a .de top level domain, it is an Austrian company (at least the contact address indicates it’s Austrian).
So who will actually use all those services? There are seven of them now but most of the early adopters are on Twitter already (and some on Jaiku). According to a recent study there are 40.8 million Germans on the internet. While this is a huge number, how many of them are really geeks to spend their time and money on posting SMS to a web service? Considering that data plans are still expensive here, not many, I guess.
Did I mention that the early adopters, the usual suspects are using Twitter already? It’s a dead end.
