Shook Magazine

Back from the office I was pleasantly surprised finding the second edition of Shook magazine in my mailbox. It’s a London based music magazine covering a wide range of topics, basically urban and black music. It has it all, from a short feature on Dutch d&b and dubstep producer Martyn to a long piece on Erykah Badu’s new album. The guys are even praising Angelo Badalamenti. Haven’t read the whole magazine yet, but it’s worth every penny so far. Get it. [via New Urban Music Blog]

New CDs

Also some new CDs arrived today. Well, actually they are not really new but some indie and post punk gems dating back from 1992 to 2006.

  • Drive Like Jehu – s/t
  • Jawbox – My Scrapbook of Fatal Accidents
  • June of 44 – Four Great Points
  • Les Savy Fav – The Cat and the Cobra
  • Hot Snakes – Audit in Progress
  • These Arms Are Snakes – Easter

Completely different to the content of Shook but equally enjoyable.

Good Old Days

Well, sort of. Thanks to Last.fm I reminisced about the good old days of hardcore punk this week. Mostly 80s stuff actually. The similar artists stations provide an excellent service to listen to great music.

And much to my surprise there were some real gems to rediscover: US bands like SSD, Reagan Youth, Black Flag, JFA, Dead Kennedys, Die Kreuzen, and Articles of Faith but also European favourites like Negazione, Raw Power, Subhumans, and Lärm. Often the sound quality of those recordings was far away from excellent, but the energy and sheer enthusiasm of the bands easily made up for that.

Fortunately many of those old recordings are still available. Fans who missed some of the recordings (or were just too young when those bands were around) can get the music for rather cheap prices these days. Often whole discographies are released on one or two CDs so fans don’t have to pay ridiculous collector prices for wornout records.

This music will always have a special place in my heart.

benga

After Burial’s seminal album Untrue from last year, I have bought another dubstep album, which was released last week: BengaDiary of an Afro Warrior.

The album features 14 musically very diverse tracks. From slow, bass drenched tracks like 26 Basslines to jazzy ones like the opener Zero M2 to floor smashers like last year’s club favourite Night.

Quite surprising – at least to me – are the undeniable techno influences on many tracks. They sound faster, but also more playful, and help making dubstep more accessible to a wider audience without abandoning old fans or losing any impact, I think.

This is a very intense album suited for both club rotation and home listening. Recommended if you like any kind of electronic music.

SC60x60

The internet is a great place. Someone has an idea, writes about it, then emails, forum posts, blog articles, comments,… are exchanged, and before you know, a new project is born. Some of those projects are never finalized, though, some better hadn’t been started in the first place, and some are surprisingly great, unique, breath taking, and definitely worth the effort of all people involved. I guess, you know projects of all three categories yourself.

One example of the latter category is certainly the Subvert Central 60×60 project. Initiated by Jason oS back in Summer of 2007, 60×60 features 60 tracks, all 60 seconds long. The featured artists (actually not 60) are members of the Subvert Central forum which is the refuge of all leftfield Drum ‘n Bass addicts. Some of them are well-known figures in the scene (Macc, Fanu, Cycom,…), some hide under new aliases, and some are lesser known producers.

Though don’t expect just Drum ‘n Bass on the 60 minutes long journey, there is hardly any. Instead you will hear guitars, ambient and more experimental sounds.

The tracks are compiled deliberately and it is an enjoyable journey throughout multiple genres. I definitely want to hear more of it. Highly recommended.

Update: I guess, I should mention that the download is free of charge. The file is available as 320kbps MP3 and as lossless FLAC.
